He may have lost the GOP runoff election night tally, but Paul Scarborough, the interim Hockley County Sheriff, won the recount.
Scarborough's opponent, R.C. Cheek unofficially won by a two-vote margin on July 31.
Later a count of provisional ballots narrowed Cheek's lead to just one vote. Then Scarborough formally requested the recount that was conducted Wednesday.
The results determined Scarborough is the winner by one vote. The count was 1181 to 1180.
A tie would have resulted in another runoff election. Scarborough will face libertarian candidate and former Sheriff David Kinney in the November general election.
