The UIL has set realignment for districts for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons. Lubbock High and Monterey are moving to 4-4A to join Frenship, Hereford, Plainview and San Angelo Lake View.
Lamesa and Brownfield dropped to 2A to join Denver City, Idalou, Kermit and Slaton.
"We always say if you're going to be the best you have to beat the best," said Berhl Robertson, LISD Chief Adminstrative Officer.
Lubbock High and Monterey High are seeing a change in teams they're supposed to beat to be the best by going 4-A.
"The schedule has some good quality competition in this new district and good quality competition in non-district. I don't see anything really different other than the fact that you're going to play some new faces and some new coaches. Other than that I'm expecting a dog fight every Friday night," said Monterey Head Football Coach, Todd Pearson.
Levelling the playing field is the reason for the adjustments.
"The UIL resets the number of classification and that grows every year. Part of the reason that grows is we've got anywhere from 10 to 25 new high schools in Texas every year. Typically they open up in the Metroplex and Houston area. They're big and they're 5-A. So there can only be a certain number of schools in 5-A classification," Robertson said.
Having Lubbock High and Monterey moving down to 4-A means fans and families in the Hub City may spend a little less on gas and travel as the two schools will be tackling local 4-A teams like Frenship.
"Absolutely it's a good thing. Not only is it a good thing because of the travel and the finances but also for us being able to play Lubbock schools. We've been doing it in non-district and now to have it mean more in a district setting is exciting," said Frenship Head Football Coach, Brad Davis.
Lubbock ISD Executive Athletic Director, Mark Ball, said that stepping down a district size will open up a field of opportunity for student athletes.
"Immediately I think it mentally helps our kids," said Ball. "I see it as an opportunity to help some sports."
These advantages come at a cost.
"We expect it to have a negative impact in terms of costing us anywhere from 30 to 50 thousand dollars more a year," Robertson said.
Nevertheless, coaches we talked to are looking forward to matching their skills against different opponents.
"Competition level, I feel, will be the same. As far as numbers go I think our numbers more-or-less match a 4-A team and I think it's a better fit for us," said Lubbock High Head Football Coach, Jason Strunk.
This year's realignment leaves Coronado the only Lubbock school in the 5-A class.
