Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Wednesday morning in Levelland for construction of a $15 million project that Hockley County voters approved last May.

Executive director Dave Quinn of Levelland's Economic Development Corporation says that the new event center will build on, and enhance, continuing growth in the community.

"This plays perfectly into Levelland's economic development plans," Quinn says. "With the industrial investment that we've made, this is the kind of the quality of life piece that we needed. And we expect a lot of retail development opportunities to come in as we have more and more of these events. We're looking at probably 45 to 50 event weekends out of the year being taken up."

The new facility is expected to be complete by this time next year.

Once completed, the Mallet Event Center and Arena will feature an 80,000 square foot air-conditioned indoor arena, an 800-seat banquet hall, a 28,000 square foot exhibit hall and plenty of other amenities.
